Thank you Frank Chimero for your interview. I am just delighted to have you apart of the series. His inspirational posters are incredible.
INSPIRATION
What is inspiring your current work?
The idea of time and narrative. Stories. Personal effects, objects and things that hold meaning. Alexander Girard's suns. Stig Lindberg's cups. The weather getting better. Realizing I get sad if I don't make stuff (Hi Will!). All the good new music coming out this year. Space. My students. Cooking.
How has your work evolved over the past few years?
I think the work has become more clearly me. I look at my older work and it seems overly rendered and shallow. I feel like the past few years have really helped me in bucking those qualities by packing more meaning per mark. I think also the past few years have been a good exercise in getting comfortable in my own shoes and really deciding that what I want to make is people happy.
What is the next step you in the art world?
I think that's up to other people. I'm just going to keep on making things that I like. I'm getting more interested in animation. I don't have the means to do it on my own, so I have to trick people into helping me. Hopefully there will be more of that...
Who are some of your favorite contemporary artists?
I super-duper dig on the work of: Steven Harrington, Matte Stevens, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Meg Hunt, The Little Friends of Printmaking, and Tim Biskup. And whoever
Is there anyone you are dying to collaborate with?
I'm super duper fortunate enough to know a bunch of people I want to collaborate with. It's been supposed to happen for quite a while, but things just haven't worked out yet. I suppose I need to get on the pony with these, but: Micah Smith (My Associate Cornelius), Tad Carpenter, and Meg Hunt. If I could summon the ghost of Alan Fletcher to collaborate with, that'd be great. I'm sure gaining the ability to do that requires some soul-selling or some dying of some sort.
How has the internet affected you and your career?
I've pretty much built the whole damn thing on this little internet thingie. I get my clients through my website. I communicate with them through email. I get feedback from friends while I'm working on things via chat. I send invoices through it. I track my progress on projects through it. I listen to music through it.
The web is great because I've benefited from it's philosophy of sharing stuff that people like with other people. So, if you've blogged about/ffffound/favorited any of my work, thank you a hundred times.
Currently Reading/ Watching?
Rereading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Also, chipping away at Michael Pollan's two books.
I'm watching The Sopranos. I'm late on the train on this one, but I'm on the last season. Don't tell me, don't tell me...
I just finished watching all of the Wire for the second time. It's the pinnacle. I don't know where to go from there...
What is your background in art?
I've been drawing forever, just like everyone else who does this. We're just all the people who didn't stop. I was ok at it, so I went to school for graphic design and illustration. Some time last year everyone decided I was an illustrator. So I said "Ok." Here I am. Still making stuff that amuses me and that I like, just with a different label. I suppose it's going to remain like that.
RECENT WORK
Do you dream often and what are your recurring themes?
I don't remember my dreams. I'm not even sure I have them. Maybe I do? This sounds very dismal now that I write it down, no?
Last dream I had that I remember my friends were eaten by dinosaurs. So, my recurring themes are: friends, eating, and dinosaurs. All awesome.
