The Little Friends of Printmaking is a really lovely and quirky company out of Wisconsin. I discovered them not too long ago and just could not get enough.

What is your background in art?
LFOP: We both studied fine art printmaking at the University of Wisconsin. It took untold years and a giant pile of money to graduate, but it was probably worth it (maybe).
Are you an artist full time and if not what else do you do?
Unbelievably, this is what we do with our lives.
If you could collaborate with one contemporary artist who would it be?
Our over-earnest answer would be Ed Ruscha, but I have no idea what we would do together. It’s hard to visualize. I think we would bring very little to the table; in fact, we might actually remove objects from that table. We do like his lettering very much.

What inspires your work?
We’re inspired by travel (when we get to) and by living with our two round, clownish cats who are always doing strange things. We’re also inspired a lot by the silkscreen process, how printed layers interact with each other. Now that we have a silkscreen studio in our home we do a lot more fooling around and experimenting to come up with ideas.
Currently Reading/Watching anything?
We are currently reading 1001 Large Print Sudoku. Please don’t tell us how it ends. Spoiler Alert! …We just bought a bootleg dvd copy of Hausu which is the greatest movie of all time. Hausu is a house which eats people. There is an evil cat, which I can identify with. We give it our highest recommendation, seven thumbs up.

What is your favorite period in art and why?
It is a tie between the Bauhaus and LOLcatz. We used to study a lot of architecture and design history, but also the cat wants a cheeseburger.
What is your artistic process?
We start with a very small sketch, about 3” x 3”. We HATE sketching. I find it to be an incredible waste of time. Then we blow that sketch up and start working in the computer. Several years later, the design is complete. Sometimes that’s it, and then other times there’s a silkscreen, which requires extra care and attention, making sure the layers work together in a way that’s interesting.
