Alyson Graves is the type of blogger I hope to be. Her site is inspiring, informative, and absolutely beautiful. She has the most wonderful for things you always wanted and never knew you needed. I was delighted to interview her.
What is your background in art?
I've been creating art ever since I can remember whether it be visually or musically. in high school, and art teacher of mine suggested I try graphic design in college, but I'd already been accepted as a music major for playing the piano, so kind of ignored the idea. but after one semester in the school of music, I quickly decided that design was truly my passion. I love graphic design and all aspects of it. my main media is on the computer, though I've been working with letterpress lately.
How has your blog affected your artwork?
I believe that my blog has definitely influenced my artwork. I can't help but think that without my blog, I would have never began designing blog headers, which to this day is my most requested work. however, I think that the biggest influence and inspiration for my work has been upon moving to Portland, OR almost 2 years ago. being surrounded by so many amazing artists is so inspiring.
Are you an artist full time and if not what else do you do?
I definitely wear multiple hats. I work full time as a graphic designer for a nation-wide retail company in the catalog/web department. on top of that, and aside from writing and maintaining my style blog, Unruly Things, I also have a freelance design business called Seventy and Sunny, where I create wonderful things daily like blog headers, calling cards, or logos.
Are you collaborating on any current projects?
dlb {my partner in crime and recent fiancé} and I are working together on some really exciting projects to debut this summer. I can't really reveal too much about our projects, but one involves vintage postage stamps as well as some wonderful items letterpressed by me and the other project is a long time passion for both of us.
What is the next step for your pieces and where do you want your art to go?
well, as I mentioned, I'm working on two wonderful projects to debut this summer, but aside from that, I've been learning and developing my skill at letterpress printing. I love the hand on feel of it as well as the overall outcome of working with something with such history. aside from having my own wedding planning to do, I've just added letterpress wedding invitations to my list of services with Seventy and Sunny.
How often do you dream and do you have any recurring themes?
I dream a LOT, though most of the time I have dreams that would really happen in real life, boring, right? I never have flying, invisible or time traveling dreams, they are always about people I know or things that I do. and sometimes I talk out loud while I'm dreaming, and if dlb is awake, he laughs and talks with me.
Currently reading/watching?
I try to make more time to read but I have a hard enough time keeping up with my google reader that most of the time evenings are spent blog reading. I don't watch much tv at all though other than my favorite, LOST, I'm a huge fan of Jeopardy and never miss a night. when we don't know the answers, dlb and I call out random things at the tv, and it's really funny when one of us actually guesses the right thing!
thanks Jessica!!!
