The Little Interview with Ana Serrano

Ana Serrano's work "currently explores the socio-cultural aspects of drug trafficking, and the branding and acceptance of the drug lord lifestyle". A very interesting and heavy subject for an artist of 25. I am drawn to her ability to mix different mediums and create a cohesive and powerful statement.

WORKSPACE

 

What is last thing you discovered about yourself?

When I have a ton of things to do, I always do the things that are least important

first, (because they're often the most enjoyable) I'm really trying hard 

to break that bad habit.

 
What is the next big project you are working on?

A two person show coming up late this year, I consider it big because I've never

prepared a body of work so far in advance. I'm approaching it completely 

different because I know I have time to experiment and change things around.

If you could own one piece of artwork what would it be?

One of Yoshitomo Nara's huge teacup sculptures, that would

make me very happy.

i love lula and cabinet.

If you could collaborate with one person who would it be?

I'd love to design ceramic sculptures with Jaime Hayon, he can design

just about anything but I really love his sculptures and figurines. 

 

 

Where do you live and does your environment affect your work?

I've lived in Los Angeles my whole life and that has definitely made

it's way into my work. Lately I've been making buildings based on

the unique architecture and storefronts of Los Angeles.

If you could live in one other place in the world where would it be?

It's hard to imagine myself somewhere else because all my family

is in LA, and I really do like living in Los Angeles, but I would

want to live somewhere where I don't need a car, everything

is walking distance, there's lots of trees, and it's sunny all the time.

 

INSPIRATION

 

Do you dream and if so do you have recurring themes?

I dream often, I have the typical ones, like losing my teeth, and

showing up somewhere without my shoes. Very frequently, I have

a dream where I'm running late to an appointment,

and I'm unable to make it because I can find my things 

and everything that could go wrong does, and I always wake

up before I can make it to the appointment.

Currently reading/ Watching anything?

Sadly, I haven't read a book in a while, I do watch a lot of movies,

(netflix can be the devil sometimes!) and I'm constantly re-watching

episodes of The Office, Family Guy, and 30 Rock, and I just recently

starting watching "It's Always Sunny in

Philadelphia", I'm about to finish Season Two.

 

INSPIRATION

 

Name some of your favorite contemporary artists?

I feel like my favorite artists change too often, some I love for a while,

some for a little bit, it's always changing, but for the moment, I'm really into

Andrea Zittel, Olaf Breuning, Rosemarie Fiore, and Tauba  Auerbach.

5 words that describe yourself?

this question is way too hard! but if i have to..

organized, trustworthy, honest, dreamer, & easy going.
