I am starting a new series on my blog called Guest Blogger: Inspiration. I will have different bloggers each month tell us what inspires them. Check out this series every friday. The extremely talented Julia Pott is first up!
STUDIO COLLECTABLES
When you spend most of your days and nights working in a studio with nothing but a big vat of tea to keep you company it's becomes difficult to keep your ideas fresh. I therefore like to make sure that everything in my eye line is brightly coloured, illustrated or absolutely ridiculous (all three combinations would be preferable). I keep other illustrators work close to my desk because nothing makes you pull your socks up and draw like seeing the awesome work of your contemporaries. I have work by Lizzy Stewart, Berkley Illustration, Stuart Kolakovic, Alice Moloney, Craig Atkinson and Ann Ruozhu, hung around my studio as well as a few token kitten mugs, a few porcelain dogs and a giant screaming unicorn head (made for me by my boyfriend). I spend a lot of my spare time collecting trinkets and figurines from antique shops, and will occasionally draw directly from them or just take inspiration from their colours and expressions. It makes my studio the room I want to spend time in, rathet then just a place to work.
MUSIC
Listening to the right music when I am working gives me the incentive to keep drawing for hours. At the moment I am listening a lot to The Microphones, Beirut, Of Montreal and She and Him, with each band producing different results in my work, depending on whether it's a bit of a downer or really upbeat. So when I find myself with an hour to kill I love trawling the internet for music videos, I love seeing how people approach the video and how it has influenced them. Two of my favourites are Hannah Waldron's video for Good Shoes which is like a beautiful moving illustration and anything by Chad Vangaalen, who writes, performs and animates his music. What a legend.
i loved reading this.
