The Shiny Squirrel:

When I first came across Robert Doherty's work I was immediately drawn to it and couldn't believe he was only a sophomore in college at SVA in NYC.

What is last thing you discovered about yourself?

a few nights ago i discovered that i can play the kazoo pretty well. its
basically like singing for people who can't sing.

What other photographer would you love to work with?

there's these three british kids
that are coming to new york over the summer. i'm looking forwards to
adventuring with. i met them via flickr. it should be fun.

What is the next big project you are working on?

banjos. i like to pretend.
it's the summer. i tend to slow down my photos a little and focus on
reading and writing and drawing. it's weird.
i've also been thinking a lot about trying video. i just moved into an
apartment with two film majors so i see some cool shit happening soon.

If you could own one piece of artwork what would it be?

the statue of liberty.

Name of a few of your favorite publications?

i try not to read a lot of magazines. i should.
but i am a pretty big fan of the vice do's & don'ts.
those don't count.

If you could collaborate with one person who would it be?

i love the way that photos move to words and words move to sound. maybe
someone who knows how to do that.

Where do you live and does your environment affect your work?

i just moved from a tiny sad room in manhattan to a big duplex in
buskwick, brooklyn, but i am originally from upstate new york. i go back
to visit my dad and trees and dogs a lot.i would probably say that my
environment is one of the biggest influences in my work. one day i would
like to be able to say that my photos are big thought out conceptual
forms of expression. for now i guess my photographs are about reflecting
my environment.

If you could live in one other place in the world where would it be?

i'm not very well traveled.
definitely somewhere with all the seasons.
somewhere by the ocean.

Do you dream and if so do you have recurring themes?

i do dream sometimes. never recurring. maybe lucid.
i usually have the strangest dreams when i sleep in other peoples homes.

Currently reading/ Watching anything?

i just finished reading Eeeee Eee Eeee by Tao Lin.
can't really afford television.
but i keep putting off watching blue velvet.

Name some of your favorite contemporary artists?

i don't know very much about the things i should be learning.
i can never remember names.
