stephen: BFA, kansas city art institute in sculpture. MFA, cranbrook academy of art in sculpture.
shauna: BFA, kansas city art institute in printmaking. MFA, cranbrook academy of art in museum studies and printmaking.
What inspires your work?
we're inspired by our everyday lives. our family, friends, where we live, even the mundane objects we use every day. we are always look for a new project and hoping that it's something we would have never imagined. right now, we are also really inspired by the zakka movement in japan. the movement holds a thoughtful return to traditional Scandinavian design that we have been charmed by.
INSPIRATION
What is the next step for your company?
this might sound funny, but our next step is to admit that we are a business. yikes, i almost couldn't even type that. we want to change things up a bit and have a real website that feels pretty different than our blog. our recent project: your message here, got us into a new frame of mind and we're looking for more projects that would allow us to interact with people rather than just making things to sell.
What publication would you die to be in?
well, there's the obvious: lines & shapes, uppercase, and any of the paumes decor series - but outside of that we are dying to do our own book! the first one we're working on is 'this is for you", a book about the act of giving in a relationship from food, to handmade gifts, to a really special e-mail.
Name a few of your favorite contemporary artists?
at the top of our very long list is: ryan jacob smith, sighn, jen corace, lullatone, fieldguided, joel stoehr, christine tillman....
Do you Dream and if so do you have recurring themes?
shauna dreams about rearranging the furniture in our home, reupholstering sofas, reorganizing all the books on the shelves.
stephen recently had a dream about taking a cross country road trip in his 69 chevy pick up truck with his dog dexter.
Currently Reading/ Watching anything?
we just watched the green porno series on the sundance channel! our friend Andy did the set and costume production and it amazing. we also just saw the live broadcast of the american life in a theater - shauna is madly in love the ira glass. stephen has been pouring through old science text books especially ones about gems.
Name the Top 5 songs you are currently listening too?
right now, shauna is obsessed with everything by first aid kit and whisper 2000. stephen has been searching for old blues records by lightin hopkins, howlin wolf, and lead belly.
who is the one person you would love to collaborate with?
since we're looking to create a web site, we have to say the design team also. if we could work with them - that would be a dream come true.
Where do you live and do you find that your environment affects your work?
we live in philadelphia and after being in kansas city, detroit and miami... we have come to realize that it's much more about the home you create rather than the place where your home is. we've always been lucky and found amazing friends where ever we live... but now, we really take the time to make our studios and our home a place that we LOVE to be.
